The award-winning phased refurbishment and redevelopment of the John Lewis Partnership’s flagship Peter Jones department store has revitalized this listed modernist building, designed primarily by William Crabtree in the early 1930s, a much-loved landmark overlooking London’s Sloane Square. Careful planning of the three-phase scheme, completed in 2004, allowed the iconic store to remain open and operational throughout the major works. The work included the creation of a large central atrium and cardiac space, which was an homage to Crabtree’s unrealized original design. Other achievements included the introduction of state-of-the-art services, improved operational conditions, significant reductions in energy consumption and the restoration of the building’s distinctive façades.
